What Are You Taking?

“Hey, Bro What Are You Taking?”

It is an all too familiar saying throughout gyms around the world when one individual asks another what they are using to make progress. Along my journey as a competitor I have heard this so many times, it’s laughable; so when the question’s asked, I reply, “it seriously.” The conversation quickly becomes shortened, most of the time the person inquiring about this ‘magical substance’ he thinks I’m taking will go back to whatever they were beforehand. I’m sure that person probably thinks I’m an asshole or lying. Likely, they will go on to attribute the majority of my work to simply having some magic hormonal-potion that I’m hiding from the rest of the universe, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

First and foremost, asking someone in the gym what they are using is rude in itself. Doing so demonstrates that you have no grasp on the amount of training/dieting that goes into a attaining a quality physique. By asking this question, you belittle the work someone’s put in up to that point. It takes time, effort, and dedication, but these three things in conjunction over a period of years will build a physique you could only dream of. On the flip side, very few people have the discipline to put continuously forth the work it takes to achieve the physique they so desire.

So many individuals think that bodybuilding is a simple task. Take some drugs, lift some weights, and then I’ll look just like Phil Heath. I’m sure if you are reading this article you know someone, or maybe you have said, ‘if I took all the shit (Fill In The Blank) was taking I could look like that too.” These are usually the misinformed, delusional people who don’t want to work for anything.

However, there is some irony in the statement ‘bodybuilding is a simple task’ because it is. Bodybuilding is repetition. Bodybuilding is consistency. Bodybuilding is dedication. Do bodybuilders use supplements? Yes, they do. But this is not the sole reason for why guys with great physiques look the way they do. Sure some guys have great genetics, and they don’t have to work as hard for what they have; but there is also blue collar bodybuilders, built with consistent diet, training, and rest.

The next time you see someone with a great physique, don’t be so quick to chalk up their success to the usage of supplements. If you want to ask questions, ask the questions that matter. Ask questions about training, nutrition, and overall health; they will be much more beneficial to you in the long run when it comes to your physique. Focus on mastering dieting/training before you delve into the use of supplementation, because once you get your hands on that ‘magical potion,’ you will soon find out that it’s not so magical without the fundamental work we’ve discussed.
